 Zen Practice (cont'd)

Chanting and Bowing

When one meditates with an organized group, in order for the group to meditate together certain protocols are used. In principle the protocols are designed to allow the group to function in an orderly manner.

These protocols involve starting and ending meditation periods and the speed of walking meditation. They also may include traditional activities in oriental Buddhist culture such as bowing and chanting.

While recognizing the need for some form of protocol to allow effective group practice, do not become attached to any form. Do whatever the group is doing, and use the protocol to practice awareness, just as in walking meditation.
